Over Dimensional Road Loads (ODRL) on Aurizon Network crossings

In the interest of safety and in accordance with Transport Infrastructure (Rail) Regulation 2017, over dimensional road vehicle operators are required to obtain permission from Aurizon Network to traverse Aurizon Network rail infrastructure. If a road load travelling on or near Aurizon Network infrastructure exceeds any of the following dimensions, a permit or confirmation issued by Aurizon Network is required:

  • 4.3m high
  • 5.5m wide
  • 35m long
  • 12T per single axle

How do I apply?

Step 1: 

Download and complete an Application form. Ensure all details are completed and are correct to avoid delays in the processing of your application.

Step 2: 

Email completed form to overdimensional@aurizon.com.au. Ensure your ODRL movement date is included within the subject of your email.

Step 3: 

Aurizon’s ODRL Team require five business days to assess your application and issue you a permit, confirmation or a request for further information. Applications submitted with less than five business days’ notice incur additional fees and cannot be guaranteed. Applications which require an engineering assessment will take more than five business days to issue a permit, confirmation or a request for further information.

Step 4: 

If you require changes to the details on an issued permit or confirmation, please email overdimensional@aurizon.com.au to obtain an amendment. Aurizon’s ODRL Team require an additional five days’ notice to re-issue a permit and confirmation.

ODRL FAQs

  • A permit is a document issued by Aurizon Network that permits an over dimensional road vehicle to cross Aurizon Network rail infrastructure (See Map for more details).
  • Aurizon Network requires that over dimensional road vehicle operators advise us of any changes to the information provided in an application. Please contact us on overdimensional@aurizon.com.au with any amendment requests. Any changes to the vehicle route will require a new application to be submitted.
  • Failure to apply may constitute an offence under traffic, rail safety, electrical safety and transport infrastructure legislation, and may also result in the imposition of fines by the relevant safety regulators or authorities. The Transport Infrastructure (Rail) Regulation 2017 specifies a maximum penalty of 20 penalty units per offence.
  • A confirmation is a document issued by Aurizon Network confirming that an over dimensional road vehicle will not be crossing Aurizon Network rail infrastructure.
  • Aurizon Network does not charge a fee for ODRL applications. There is, however, a fee for permits and amendments to permits. Please see our Fees & Charges Guide for further information. Confirmations and amendments to confirmations are free of charge.
  • An Aurizon Engineer is required to make an additional assessment of an ODRL application when the dimensions of the vehicle exceed the permissible dimensions for the Level Crossing(s) traversed. This process requires additional time to issue a permit, confirmation or request for further information.
