Celebrating Women in Engineering 2017
Antonia Niaga shares her story on International Women in Engineering Day 2017.
After growing up and studying in Brisbane, I graduated from the University of Queensland with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2012.
At the time, I knew that engineers provided a practical application of knowledge of the world around us to make change for the better, but I had no idea what an engineering job actually entailed.
In 2013, I was delighted to join Aurizon’s Graduate Program as part of the Vehicle & Track Engineering team. I was eager and ready to absorb everything there was to know about trains and the rail industry.
As a Graduate, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a range of areas within our operations. The projects I’ve worked on and the teams I have worked in as part of the Graduate Program been as varied and diverse as the people I’ve worked with.
Throughout my experiences at Aurizon it has been the people I’ve worked with, their willingness to share their knowledge and stories, and the feeling of community that has made the difference in my career.
During my time with Aurizon, I have lived and worked in Rockhampton and Brisbane, Queensland. I’ve worked on a variety of projects such as commissioning and repairing track machines, testing the performance of trains, analysing and optimising nationwide fleet data, and modelling, simulating and testing rollingstock - just to name a few.
My three-year rotation in the Graduation Program fittingly stopped with our Brakes team where I am proud to be continuing my career with Aurizon as Wheel, Rail & Brakes Engineer.
Throughout my time with Aurizon, I have also had the opportunity to participate in a range of railway industry training and conferences to further my professional development. A highlight has been attaining Young Professional Scholarships to attend Conferences on Railway Excellence.
After being inspired at the 2015 Women in Engineering Leadership summit, I went on to win the 2016 Railway Graduate Engineer Award. In the same year, I was a part of a project who were recognised at Aurizon’s Employee Excellence Awards for displayed integrity.
As Mechanical Engineers at Aurizon, we work hard to improve the performance of our rollingstock and ultimately the operations of our business – making changes for the better.
