Not many accountants can say they have been on an 18,000 tonne freight train, or had a bird's eye view of coal wagons emptying their haul at a Port, but for Rebecca these are some of the highlights of her career as a Graduate Accountant at Aurizon.
Rebecca worked as a receptionist in the hotel industry whilst completing her Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management, before moving into an Assistant Manager role at two Queensland hotels. Whilst working in hotel management she completed her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and it was at this time she decided to make a career change and moved back to Brisbane to complete a Bachelor of Commerce.
Following the completion of her Commerce degree Rebecca joined Aurizon as a Graduate Accountant in February 2014 and hasn't looked back since.
She has had the opportunity to rotate through various areas of Aurizon's business travelling and working in the finance divisions in Brisbane, Rockhampton and Toowoomba, whilst completing her Certified Practicing Accountant qualification.
Rebecca is currently based in Toowoomba in Aurizon's Service Delivery team, where she has the opportunity to work with a variety of people from across the business, gaining greater exposure to different functions and operations within the Company.
"I like the variety that a career at Aurizon offers, half my time is spent in suits with heels and the rest of the time I'm in high visibility clothing with safety boots," Rebecca said.
"Each morning I connect with internal stakeholders from across Australia to evaluate operations from the previous day and forward plan. This includes analysing data to look for trends and working with stakeholders to determine how to improve efficiencies and finances.
"Aurizon has such a diverse workforce and my role allows me to connect with a large number of people who all have a different story, I really enjoy hearing about their backgrounds, experiences and where they come from. I value the fact that each colleague has different insights or knowledge which can be gained from working with them to help me progress my career."
