Anzac Day - Honouring 110 Years of Sacrifice and Service

This Anzac Day, we honour the legacy of our defence forces by reflecting on the 110 years since the Gallipoli Campaign. It's a time to remember the profound impact of their sacrifices and to express our gratitude in meaningful ways. Whether through personal reflection or community activities, let's ensure their legacy continues to inspire us all.
At Aurizon, we take pride in our team members who have transitioned from distinguished service in the defence force to successful civilian roles within our company. We acknowledge the wealth of transferable skills that veterans bring, which are invaluable across various sectors like maintenance, supply chain, operations, engineering and leadership, paving the way for exceptional careers in our industry.
Fiona Ellis works as the Regional Operations Manager for Aurizon’s Bulk East business in Melbourne. With over 15 years of experience in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), she shares her insights on transitioning from the defence force to a career in the rail industry.
Reflecting on her military experience, Fiona says, "My time in the RAAF taught me that no task is insurmountable with a great team and good leadership. Teamwork is the key to success." These skills have been invaluable in her role at Aurizon.
Transitioning to civilian employment presented both challenges and opportunities. Fiona recalls, "The camaraderie in the RAAF made it feel like a family. Although the civilian work environment is supportive, there's nothing quite like the camaraderie that serving in the military brings." She appreciates the increased flexibility in civilian roles, noting, "In the civilian work environment, you aren't 'locked' into a role or posting the same way you are in the military."
One of the aspects Fiona enjoys most about her job at Aurizon is the supportive team environment. "The team and my peers are very supportive and want to see everyone succeed. There is plenty of support if you have questions or need help," she shares.
For veterans or serving members considering a career in the rail industry, Fiona advises, "If you are team-focused, then the rail industry aligns well with that mindset." She also observes that the skill sets of Aurizon employees and military personnel share many similarities, particularly in terms of flexibility and adaptability.
Reflecting on her life after a military career, Fiona expresses, "If I had my time over, I wouldn't change my service in the RAAF. It was a fabulous opportunity that taught me a lot about teamwork and leadership."
Fiona remains in contact with many of her former colleagues and is an active member of the RSL, maintaining strong ties to her military background.
As we mark Anzac Day this Friday, Fiona shares what the day means to her:
"I feel immense pride seeing how our nation embraces Anzac Day. Young children march with their grandparents, and others march in place of relatives who are no longer with us. Anzac Day demonstrates that mateship transcends time and is a day to renew those friendships."
