Aurizon's Coal business provides a critical service to Australia's $127 billion1 export coal industry; the nation's largest source of export revenue in FY2023.

We haul around half of Australia’s export coal volume. As a supply chain partner for our customers, we transported 185 million tonnes of coal in FY2023.

Coal hauled is split approximately evenly between metallurgical coal and thermal coal, with demand linked to Asian steel production and energy generation, respectively.

Growing with our customers

In FY2023, we transported 185 million tonnes of coal.

We connect mines in the Newlands, Goonyella, Blackwater, Moura and West Moreton systems in Queensland, and the Hunter Valley and Illawarra coal systems in New South Wales, with domestic customers and coal export terminals.

We are the only rail operator with services to all six coal export ports on Australia’s east coast.

We continue to work on strategic technology investments such as TrainGuard, designed to improve the safety and productivity of our rollingstock and people. Read our latest Sustainability Report to find out more.

Regardless of where we operate, we are committed to working with our customers to provide safe and efficient rail services, that will support the growth of Australia’s second largest export.

Delivering for our customers

We bring capability, technological innovation and our coal haulage experience of more than 50 years to our customers each day to support the safe and efficient delivery of coal to markets in Australia and internationally.

Our Coal business employs more than 2,000 people, with a large majority of these employees living and working in regional communities in Queensland and New South Wales.

Aurizon has the largest fleet of coal-hauling locomotives and wagons in Australia. We continue to make major investments in technology solutions to drive productivity and efficiencies, while delivering safety and environmental benefits.

Our fleet provides the flexibility required to meet fluctuating demand in addition to being suitably agile to respond to the expected growth of our existing and future customers.
