Anzac Day - A day of reflection and gratitude for our veterans
This Anzac Day, let us each find our own unique way to pay tribute to the extraordinary sacrifices of our Defence Forces. It’s a day to reflect on the profound impact they’ve had on our lives and to show our gratitude in ways that resonate personally with us.
At Aurizon, we take immense pride in our team members who have transitioned from distinguished service in the Defence Force to successful civilian roles within our company.
We acknowledge the wealth of transferable skills that veterans bring, which are invaluable across various sectors like maintenance, supply chain, operations, engineering, and leadership, paving the way for exceptional careers in our industry.
Christine Stewart who works as the Commercial portfolio Manager (Intermodal) for Aurizon’s Bulk Central business in the Northern Territory, made the transition to rail following over 15 years in the Australian Defence Force.
Christine shares her insights on transitioning from the Defence Force to a career in the rail industry.
She notes, “In my new role within the rail sector, I’ve found that patience, communication, and listening are crucial skills that apply to both fields.
“During my service, working autonomously was rare; teamwork was essential. This made my transition to the rail industry smooth, as I was accustomed to being part of a team.
“Recognising the value of a strong team culture is vital for performing my job efficiently and effectively, and these are competencies I developed in the military and now bring to my position at Aurizon.
“Moreover, the rail industry, much like the Defence Force, prioritises a robust safety culture, which further facilitated my transition.”
As we mark Anzac Day this Thursday, Christine shares what the day means to her.
Christine Stewart, Australian Defence Force
“Anzac Day stirs in me feelings of both sorrow and pride. While I have family that served, attending a parade reminds me that those I served with were also my family at one time.
“It’s also about spending time with the family you didn’t choose but with whom you served, and honouring those who gave their lives so we can live as we do today.
“For that, I am grateful."
